MUCH TO DO INSIDE

MUCH TO DO INSDE (2021)
Oil, pastel, stick on canvas (76 cm x 101 cm)
By Precious Opara
“‘Much To Do Inside’ (2022) depicts a growing sense of isolation in the domestic. Opara’s piece speaks to the correlation and mutual dependence between plant and person, each requiring air and water, and each a living creature inhabiting the space. The plant and place that the artist has nurtured have agency, manipulating her into staying. The work evaluates attitudes toward indoor space, which had become a primary space of safety for so many during the pandemic. Casting houseplants as the oppressor, the figure is romantically lounging in rest, juxtaposed by the suffocating and jealous plant.”
